constituted the sole protection afforded in these
waters to shipping by the Chinese Government.
The head of the gang which boarded the "Kuang
On* was subsequently arrested for some other of-
fence and executed, but it was only after his death
that his connection with the "Kuang On case was
discovered.
Only one other case of piracy has been reported
to me since my arrival. Very little booty was ob-
tained in this instance by the pirates, as they
were interrupted by the sudden appearance on the
scene of the Chinese gunboat stationed here.
Owing to the cowardice of the people on board the
launch the gunboat was not informed of the attack
until the pirates had landed. They were at once
pursued but made good their escape.
Since writing
the above I hear that the "Tai Heng" has again been
pirated and robbed of 7,000 taels of sycee which
she was conveying to Canton. A portion of the booty
was discovered, on the return of the launch to Wu-
Wuchow in the possession of the crew. This may throw
some further light on the "Kuang On' incident.
